Not Everyone Despairs At CMS Reimbursement - Pihsiang, Shoprider - China

News From The Taipai International Bicycle Show

Pihsiang Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Taiwan`s largest supplier of handicapped electric scooters, is expected to enjoy a 30% shipment growth this year due to the subsidization program offered by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to electric-scooter buyers in the United States.

According to Pihsiang, CMS listed the handicapped electric scooter a subsidization item for the first time in late 2006, and the highest subsidy amount is now set at US$3,800 for each scooter, which almost covers the full price of a Pihsiang product.

Last year, Pihsiang shipped about 65,000 handicapped electric scooters, including around 30,000 units to the U.S. market. Thanks to the CMS subsidization program, some institutional investors estimated that the company`s total shipment this year would surge 30%.

Go figure.

Days Healthcare - Pihsiang

Pihsiang (Shoprider brand) Assets 20,6 million Euro attached.

As a follow up to this post , the Hsinchu District Court has granted a provisional attachment order in favor of DCC’s British-based subsidiary Days Healthcare.

Seems to me the enforcement actions of European companies in Taiwan has clearly been shown to be effective. There is still the appeal - of course.

Pihsiang Machinery (Shoprider Brand) Loses Against DCC (Days Healthcare) in Taiwan District Court

The Taiwan District court ordered that the London High Court judgment in which DCC (Days Healthcare) was awarded damages of approximately 20 million Euro (23.4 million USD) be enforced.

The judgment was as a result of termination of a supply agreement of Shoprider brand scooters by Pihsiang.

A final appeal may be made to the Taiwan High Court.

It is interesting to the home healthcare business community that this European judgment has been found to be enforceable in Taiwan. There could be more Healthcare companies that follow this route to enforce judgments of this type.

Just a thought - how enforceable would a judgment of this type be in Mainland China where most home healthcare manufacturers and distributors now source product?
